Teaching Understanding with Technology: This was the first of the ten courses I took as part of the Masters in Educational Technology program. This course introduced me to the Educational Technology field. We covered some basic theories such as teaching with technology, learning and understanding, and creative uses of technologies for learning. We also ventured into more advanced topics such as professional learning networks and the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) theory developed by Dr. Punya Mishra and Dr. Matthew J. Koehler.

Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education: This class was a continuation of CEP 810. Therefore, CEP 811 delved into the TPACK theory and teaching with technology. Applying Educational Technology to Practice: CEP 812 was the last of the certificate courses. Some of the most important items we worked on during this class include a blog, a personal learning plan, and a wicked problem project. We also learned how to create screencasts, podcasts, and vodcasts. Furthermore, with the completion of this class the requirements for the Certificate in Educational Technology were met. I received my certificate in the spring semester of 2011.

Learning in School & Other Settings: The title of this class is as descriptive as can be. In CEP 800 we learned about teaching in school, home, online, and other settings. Some of the specifics we learned included creating a lesson plan, evaluating teaching technologies, and evaluating materials that exemplified misconceptions about teaching and learning. We also analysed the role of games in educational settings. Here is an example of a lesson plan I created in this class.

Teaching Students Online: In this class we focused on researching, testing, and implementing Learning Management Systems (LMS). Some of the LMS systems I looked at included Moodle, Blackboard, Haiku, and Angel. For my LMC project I selected a system called coursesites by Blackboard. I created an entire online course and published it to cousesites. Some of the contents I incorporated within my course include video tutorials, audio podcast, text tutorials, lesson plans, and interactive exams. There are also a number of tools students who sign up for my free online class can access and benefit from. Here is a copy of the syllabus I used for this class.

SUMMER 2013
TE 831
Instructors:
Jeff Bale |
Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology: TE 831 helped me further my understanding of TPACK, introduced me to SCOT, and TIK. TPACK is a theory I have always felt I could learn more from. One could always learn more about the application of TPACK's principles in every day's teaching practices. I feel TE 831 gave me the opportunity to think about how technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge can be leveraged when developing lesson plans, presentations, vodcasts, and other teaching materials. In TE 831 we created multiple vodcasts, podcasts, and lesson plans I currently use at work.

Approaches to Educational Research: This was one of the most challenging classes of the MAET program. However, it was also by far, one of the most rewarding classes I took during my time at MSU. In CEP 822 I learned how to find, evaluate, and select reputable sources of information. For example professional journals, periodical, and professional research works such as case studies, theses, and dissertations. I also learned how to conduct a comprehensive literature review. We analyzed over 20 articles from professional journals during the literature review process. My topic was digital citizenship. Over the course of this class not only did I become very familiar with my subject but I also learned the process of conducting professional research.

Teach & Learn Across Curriculum: This class focused on leveraging web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, social media sites, photo sharing sites like flickr and other online resources. We learned how to integrate these technologies into the classroom. Thus, capitalizing on the affordances of technology for educational purposes. We studied a book titled Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasts and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms by Will Richardson. In addition, we conducted multiple research projects called deep and open learning on the web.

CEP 807Instructors:
Matthew Koehler |
Capstone Educational Technology: This is my capstone class. Among other things, in this class, I learned how to build my own portfolio website. The portfolio is intended to provide a wide range of information about what I learned in the classes I took in the MAET program at MSU. This portfolio will allow me to showcase some of my projects to family members, friends, and potential employers for years to come. The portfolio was evaluated by the instructor at the end of the semester. Feedback was also received from classmates in multiple occasions and all feedback was implemented in changes that resulted in an improved final portfolio.
